CHAPTER 14
Stay Ghul and Composed
Hamza
I DIDNâT PUKE! THIS FEELS LIKE A MOMENTOUS OCCASION. I was in a whirling devnado, traveling from London to Paris across the English Channel, and I didnât upchuck my guts. Also, did not need a passport and my family didnât get stopped by airport security for a ârandomâ check of our luggage. I may not be the ultimate math whiz, but Iâm smart enough to figure out that sometimes when authorities say ârandom,â they really mean âany time we want to because youâre brown and thatâs suspicious.â Traveling by twister could really be a bonus for us, except for the part where the tornado is a shape-shifting dev who wants all humans to bow down to him. Yeah, that part⦠not so good. But Iâm working on it.
Itâs still night when we land in a giant courtyard of what looks like a palace with buildings on three sides making a U shape. In front of us is this totally cool glass pyramid. Iâve seen the Louvre in pictures and in this one show that has an epic chase scene where this fancy car crashes through the pyramid. This is my third museum in one day, and all these forced-culture, near-death experiences are getting tiring. But I gotta say, this may be the awesome-est museum Iâve ever seenâfrom the outside at least.
I hear a groan and grunt behind me; I turn to see Ahriman twisting back into his four-eared, red-faced self. Heâs on one knee, hand on the ground like heâs trying to balance himself. I noticed he was a little dizzy when we arrived in London, but this seems worse. Honestly, Iâm usually pretty green-feeling myself when we land, but Ahriman looks more out of it than me. Maybe even weakened? And I swear, as we were about to land, his devnado sputtered a little, slowed down, so I saw Ahrimanâs red face creepily stretched out for a tiny second. He never faltered like that before.
I wonder if this is my moment; if heâs weakened, maybe I could take him, knock him over, maybe, andâ¦
Holy moly! Is that⦠the Eiffel Tower? Whoa!
My mom loves Paris. I really wish she were with me now. And my dad. And Amira. And I wish it were a real vacation and not this doomsday devnado road trip. And it would be a lot less scary if my family were here.
The Eiffel Tower is all lit up, and a twinkling beam of light from the top of the tower sweeps across the city. My parents came here on an anniversary trip and said it was a magical city because of the culture and the architecture. I kind of get that now. But Iâm more interested in the magically delicious part, because they also said Paris has the best pastries in the world. I canât believe Iâm not going to be able to try a single one.
âHave faith, young champion, perhaps one day you will.â
Itâs that voice again! Maqboolâs voice. Ahriman still
